Boy's Varsity vs Archbishop Wood HS on 9/4/2008

The Saints Home Opener on the road at United German Hungarian Club in Oakford, PA versus Archbishop Wood had a bad omen before the team left for the game on I-95. The team bus was late arriving for the game and after getting on the road, traffic was snarled due to a disabled tractor trailer on I-95. The team arrived at 5:45PM for the 6:00 contest. AW players had plenty of time to prepare while the Saints hurried off the bus to get started. The plan of a Home Game at Beneficial Field at UGH under the lights was fantastic!!! Our boys deserved and got a chance to play on a better surface with grandstands for the fans.
Wood struck first not long into the first half but our boys responded with a give and go goal from Forwards Leo Malara and Joey Hatton. Leo's blast from long range tied the score at 1-1. Wood's defense, however, has been very strong in the early season games. In their opener against  Kennedy-Kenrick their defense/goalkeepers posted a 3-0 shutout win and held KK to only four shots on goal. Offensively, Wood kept the pressure on the Saints defense for most of the game, however, Austin West 's hustling defensive plays stopped several Wood breakaways. Goalie Justin Brydges did his best among many shots on goal and made some fine saves.
INJURY REPORT:  Strong-footed Will Huff did not play due to a leg injury

Final Score: Archbishop Wood 12 Neumann- Goretti Saints 1

The Saints will try to rebound on Monday, Sept 8th against non-league foe Academy Park and pick up thier first win of this young season.
