Men Saints open season today!!!

Posted Saturday, August 22, 2009 by gh
Here's a recap of the beginning of the 2009 Men Saints Varsity Season games played today at Monsignor Bonner High School in Drexel Hill. The Saints were part of a four team scrimmage schedule. The four teams competing were host Monsignor Bonner, West Catholic, Academy Park and our Neumann-Goretti Saints.

The Saints played in the first contest against Academy Park with rain falling throughout most of the game.  The Saints played fast and furious in spite of the weather conditions and had at least 7 scoring chances in the game but failed to put a goal in the net. Overall, they had more shots on goal than Academy Park. Solid defense by Justin Brydges and Maurice Heard and strong goalkeeping by John Cudjik kept Academy Park off the scoreboard for the entire game. Regulation play ended with a 0-0 tie score. Both teams played an additional 5 minute overtine period with neither team scoring a goal. The game then went to a Penalty Kick Shootout where Academy Park and Neumann-Goretti went 9 players deep before Academy Park scored a goal and the Saints did not answer with their final shot. Scoring for N-G in the shootout were Joseph Hatton (Goal #1), Will Huff (Goal #1), Brian Uhl (Goal #1), Jules Lozzi (Goal #1) and Oscar Mejia (Goal #1)
Final Score:

Academy Park 6
N-G Saints 5

After losing a tough battle against Academy Park in the first match, the Saints faced off against West Catholic in the consolation game. West Catholic had lost to Monsignor Bonner 3-0 in an earlier game. Both teams were hungry for a victory in this matchup.
The game was scoreless due to solid defense and goalkeeping by both teams until Joseph Hatton (Goal #2) scored on a excellent pass from Will Huff (Assist #1) to give the Saints a 1-0. This is the first goal of the season for the Saints. The Saints added to their  lead on another Will Huff assist (Assist #2) on a throw-in in front of West Catholic's net and Brian Uhl (Goal #2)banged home his first goal of the season. This gave the Saints a 2-0 lead which was held onto until the final whistle was blown.

Final Score:

N-G Saints 2
West Catholic 0

Overall, a nice beginning for the Saints squad!!! Congrats to freshman Michael Gallagher and Tommy DeFino on strong performance in their first high school games. Austin West battled hard and sustained a minor leg injury. Nice hustle and solid all around play from Jules Lozzi, Vincent Iannece, Phil Filipello, Ken Guisini, Oscar Mejia and Josh Baez
