Lady Saints lose tough battle against Archbishop Prendergast

Posted Saturday, September 19, 2009 by Jim McBride
The Lady Saints soccer team suffered a heart breaking 1-0 loss to visiting Archbishop Prendergast yesterday in Catholic League Blue action.  The game which renewed a rivalry with its old Southern Division foe (Prendie was in the Red Division last year) was a seesaw battle with both teams squandering many scoring chances.  The game’s lone goal was scored 15 minutes in the 2nd half when a shot by a Prendie player hit off a Lady Saint defender and found its way into the corner of the Lady Saints net.  The Lady Saints which had two (2) goals called back for being off-sides had the game’s best scoring chance in the 1st half when Sophomore Midfielder Jennie Filippello took a pass from Freshman Forward Karla Masciotro just outside the penalty area and blasted a shot over the Prendie keeper who had come off her line to cut the angle down.  The shot appeared to be heading straight for the net when at the last possible second a Prendie defender cleared the ball off the goal line keeping the Lady Saints off the scoreboard.   Freshman goalkeeper Alaina Zepp who turned away 8 shots kept the Lady Saints in the match early allowing them to overcome their sluggish start.  The loss brings the Lady Saints record to (1-1 PCL Blue; 2-2 overall).    Up next for the Lady Saints will be Cardinal Dougherty in the Lacey Gallagher Memorial Tournament  @ Cabrini College on Sunday, September 20, 2009 at 10:00 am.  Cost is $5.00 at the gate.
